Hot Tub and Sauna: How to Create an Effective Recovery Cycle

What Is Important to Understand

A hot tub and sauna create a meaningful recovery cycle only when they stop functioning as two separate wellness procedures and begin working as connected biological layers.

When the Hot Tub + Sauna Cycle May Not Be Appropriate

The combination of warm-water immersion and sauna can be valuable, but it is not appropriate for every person or in every situation.

People with cardiovascular disease, unstable blood pressure, arrhythmias, acute illness, fever, infection, active inflammatory conditions, dehydration, pregnancy, significant weakness or uncertainty about heat exposure should discuss the use of a hot tub, sauna or their combination with a physician or another qualified healthcare professional.

Caution is also important when the body is already severely fatigued.

A long or excessively intense cycle can become another physiological load rather than a recovery stimulus.

A well-tolerated recovery cycle should leave the person feeling appropriately settled and lighter — not depleted, dizzy, markedly uncomfortable, unusually short of breath or disturbed by palpitations.
